  • While the article focuses on major policy themes that tend to make national news (abortion, guns, immigration, etc.), consider the incredible variation in statutes applicable to common interest communities. This variation is part of the chaos homeowners and volunteer leaders are faced with every single day.

    • Increasingly, policies that matter in people's lives are originating in the states …As states go in different directions on social and economic policy, the consequences will be deeply felt by all Americans, regardless of their place on the political spectrum, with implications around the world. - The Economist

Fire Safety: Grilling

  • Fire code and other regulations relating to the use of open flame grills vary by state (and also by city / fire department). We've added a Seattle / Washington State grilling reference on our Emergency Preparedness page .

  • Washington State has consistently chosen to allow open flame grills on R-2 (apartment and condominium) decks and balconies

    • Your individual property may establish more strict rules and regulations that limit or ban open flame grills
    • Multiple states have adopted the 2018 International Fire Code which is highly restrictive of open flames on decks and balconies
